Plot Summary
Musician Robert (John Shea) is a perpetual starving artist with low overhead and minimal commitments. When Robert’s daughter announces that she’s engaged, he advises her against it – his own marriage to Emily (Lea Thompson) didn’t last, and he doesn’t understand why anyone would want to give up independence. Yet when Robert and Emily reunite and dredge up old memories and hurts, both discover they have a lot of unresolved issues and that love, marriage and divorce aren’t quite as simple as they’d like.

Fresh: Although they talk enough to qualify for radio, John Shea and Lea Thompson make the high-wire act of "The Trouble With the Truth" a convincing, moving and provocative two-hander.
Fresh: An equitable, tender, sometimes surprising game of hard truth-telling.
Fresh: A divorced couple rehash their relationship in this touching indie drama.
Fresh: There isn't a false note in either the dialogue or the performances.

A full meal
Intelligent, mature, meaty, romantic, and funny, this movie is a rarity today and would be much more at home among the romances of classic Hollywood or foreign auteurs - limited locations, wall-to-wall dialogue, beautiful photography, brilliant performances. It hides behind none of the usual flash and trickery - neither CGI nor ugly, grainy shakycam. The reality here is genuine, but beautiful, derived purely from the ideas, situation, and performance. Neither of the characters' perspectives is necessarily right, we aren't asked to pick a side or agree, just to empathize with the incredibly relatable and frustrating condition of not knowing whether you made the right decision. Recommended for anyone who has ever been in love, and isn't anymore.
Nothing Troubling About This Film
Everything about this film is perfect. For starters the acting by Lea Thompson and John Shea is brilliant. Both actors give stellar performances and I might add Oscar worthy. Jim Hemphill's direction is simple but superb. He keeps the two actors mostly in one setting but the conversation they have during the complete running time of the film is engaging. The film is photographed beautifully. The subtle lighting and rich colors throughout the film Give off an inviting and cozy feel to the film. This film is nearly perfect in every way. This is a must see film for any fan of Lea Thompson or Jim Shea. Not to be missed and highly recommended.
A Night to Remember
In equal turns hilarious and heartrending, this excellent film offers audiences an engrossing plot with intense personal stakes for the complex characters involved. Insightful writing and charismatic performances highlight this mature dramedy. Unlike generic Hollywood product, this piece delivers a beautiful, challenging story that's actually about three-dimensional people. A date movie that's sure to provoke conversation, THE TROUBLE WITH THE TRUTH demands to be seen by adventurous filmgoers seeking something fresh and heartfelt.
