Rotten: Troy isn't so much a simplified retelling of The Iliad as a re-imagined version of it, told wholly without imagination.
Fresh: Harsh, serious, and both exhilarating and tragic, the right tonal combination for Homer.
Fresh: It's massive, opulent, passionate and -- unlike most summer time-wasters -- surprisingly intelligent.
Rotten: A numbingly reliable tick-tock of expository set pieces alternating with vast CGI-aided battle scenes.

It's Okay...
Troy could've been very good had they not gone with cheezy cliches of the typical summer blockbuster. It's a pretty good film, and I can watch it thoroughly anytime I can without having to fast forward. The acting is pretty lame. Orlando Bloom is in his thousandth performance as a character with a sword/bow. Pit has an annoying "accent" and Eric Bana sounds low in self-esteem when he's delivering those battle speeches. Peter O'Toole is alright, though his lines are very very very simple and probably took no thought in writing. As far as the actresses, they're all pretty good -- probably the strongest people in the entire cast. Speaking of the cast, the list of stars is what makes this one unbelievable film... how the heII does the old world have so many gorgeous people? Crimeny, it makes 300 look like its full of dogs. Typical Hollywood to want to glamorize instead of ensembelize -- if that's a word. The special-effects and costume design are very good. Every time the armies convulge into battle make for some good entertainment, though Petersen and his editors really could've fixed up the angles and shots. The music by Horner is pretty bad. Very uninspired, and not worth your money should you be interested in buying it on here. Petersen is pretty much a one-hit wonder -- Das Boot. Everything he's made post that has tanked as far as story, or just good entertainment. The writing here gets hammy, be it dialogue or just the evolving story -- it gets tedious when there's no fighting. The sacking of Troy -- no spoilers there, I hope -- goes very fast and the ending is a major let down. As much as they tried to make these caricatures 3D, the ending screws it all up. There is absolutely NO closure on anyone's end. Overall, this is the director's cut, and I have not seen this one. I've heard nothing but bad things from Petersen's omissions and additions. Horner's music seems completely absent -- which seems more appropriate than the drudgery used to replace his "work". I reccomend the original version simply because it is mindless entertainment with simple battle scenes, uneven character development, and a script full of cliches. Worth a rent, not a buy.
ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER
troy is one of those movies that you will talk about years from now and wanna watch! Awesome actors, awesome story. This movie is LEGENDARY!!! awesome
An excellent mix of fact, fiction, and history!
Regardless of other's reviews (particularly the one that claims to have studied Greek "myth" in depth), this is an extremely well-done movie, and does the best job it can at telling a 10yr+ story in only a couple of hours. Yes, it leaves you wanting more - as does any movie which must make an attempt at putting so large of a story into a timeframe acceptable to Hollywood execs. The casting here is unbelievably well-done, and anyone who has studied Greek history, as well as mythology, would most certainly love the portrayal of all characters involved. As with all epic or historical movies, there is much fiction mixed in with fact (or at least fact that we know for sure). The most powerful thing about this film is the desire it creates to make you want to read (and understand) 'The Iliad' as well as the true history of events that occurred. Both of my kids were immediately inspired to do so; who could ask for more than that? If the "past is prologue", what better way to inspire a teenager's mind into learning? Selfishness, war, tyranny, love, loss, and a taste of history. Don't let other reviews misguide you - this is a historic tale that not only entertains, but leaves you wanting more. - From another reviewer who has studied Greek "myth" quite in-depth.
