Plot Summary
In 1970, John Wayne earned an Academy Award for his larger-than-life performance as the drunken, uncouth and totally fearless one-eyed U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. The cantankerous Rooster is hired by a headstrong young girl (Kim Darby) to find the man who murdered her father and fled with the family savings. When Cogburn's employer insists on accompanying the old gunfighter, sparks fly. And the situation goes from troubled to disastrous when the inexperienced Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) joins the party. Laughter and tears punctuate the wild action in this extraordinary Western which features performances by Robert Duvall and Strother Martin.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: By growing old disgracefully as the fat, swaggering Rooster Cogburn, Wayne proves he can act -- and solves his own senior-citizen problem in one master stroke.
Fresh: It's mostly Wayne all the way. He towers over everything in the film.
Fresh: Although some say Wayne's Oscar was given out of sympathy instead of his performance, he still acts well as the sheriff who's past his peak.

What A Classic!
Not only is this a great John Wayne western, but also, Kim Darby as Mattie Ross adds the independence, spirit, and humor that western women had (including from my own family from Wyoming). I love this movie!
Nothing Like a good John Wayne Movie
Nothing's better than a good John Wayne movie. Growing up I've watched this movie many times and everytime I watch it gets a little easier to watch him loose his trusted steed. John Wayne was one of the greatest horsemen of all time, and Rooster Cogburn is one of my favorite characters. An old Sherriff, past his prime, hunting down bad guys and prooving everyone wrong.
One of the All-Time Greatest Films Ever Made
This is the only movie I have ever bought online. I wanted one that I could watch over and over again on my phone without getting tired of it, like on long flights, and this is the one. I will always be in love with Kim Darby, and of course the Duke is at his best, which is still unapproached by any other actor, in my judgment. This film is a most unusual and extraordinary achievement by all concerned.
