Plot Summary

Early in 2011, U2 returned to Hansa Studio in Berlin to discuss the making of Achtung Baby. From The Sky Down, is a new documentary film directed by Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim (It Might Get Loud, Waiting for Superman, An Inconvenient Truth). Twenty years after the release of U2’s Achtung Baby (1991), Davis Guggenheim charts the path toward this groundbreaking album. Guggenheim uses animation and unseen footage from Berlin and Dublin alongside conversation to reveal what is now a key chapter in U2’s career. “In the terrain of rock bands - implosion or explosion is seemingly inevitable. U2 has defied the gravitational pull towards destruction… this band has endured and thrived. From The Sky Down asks the question why.” Davis Guggenheim

Greatness

Reminds you of a time when bands were really bands and they actually made music.

Rock n Roll.

What a perfect documentary. What a perfect album. What a perfect BAND!

Now I'm depressed

I'm a long-time U2 fan and have anticipated this film for some time now. I can only say that after my first viewing...it leaves me a bit depressed that I watched it. It's no secret that U2 endured a critical rough patch when they released Rattle & Hum but they still had many many fans. This documentary makes it seem as though the band truly was...as Bono so often puts it "too stupid to enjoy being at number 1". Most of the footage borrowed for this film is well known by serious U2 fans. There was no real insight into having the band re-visit Berlin. I loved "It Might Get Loud" but perhaps this is Davis Guggenheim's "Rattle & Hum". I'll probably give it another chance on the off chance my blood sugar was out of whack when I watched it but be warned...this is not for the casual U2 fan and not for those that have hung in since the early days that still wish to keep some positive feeling about the band. Everything U2 have released since All That You Can't Leave Behind (their last good album in my opinion) contain good songs but lack the focus of their better albums. Just look at the uninspired cover photo of "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" and you know what's going to be inside. I get the sense that the band has decided to pull back and enjoy their lives a bit and no longer put everything into their music which is good for them...not so good for us. Or maybe lightening only strikes so often but if I hear one more "Put On Your Boots" style song I might just throw in the towel. Watch this documentary if you simply need to know everything about the band as there are a few new tid-bits. If not...perhaps enjoy the apparent illusion that they are happy and that people like them. Nice cover shot of Larry though.
