Plot Summary
This neorealist masterpiece by Vittorio De Sica follows an elderly pensioner as he strives to make ends meet during Italy’s postwar economic recovery. Alone except for his dog, Flike, Umberto struggles to maintain his dignity in a city where human kindness seems to have been swallowed up by the forces of modernization. His simple quest to satisfy his basic needs—food, shelter, companionship—makes for one of the most heartbreaking stories ever filmed, and an essential classic of world cinema.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It's hard to think of a more remarkable tribute to the resilience of the human spirit than the one Umberto D. puts on the screen.
Fresh: The moral punch of a postwar 'art film' classic like Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D. (1952) can be bruising, if only for the movie's unblinking consideration of how society discards the unwanted elderly.
Fresh: One of the great humanist cinema works: a portrayal of age, poverty and simple lives in postwar Rome that is both luminous and heartbreaking.
Fresh: Heroes like Umberto D. are hard to find, and your life will be better for having met him.
