Yes there are subtitles.
There is a warning by another poster claiming that there are no subtitles on this recording. Not true. There are English subtitles.
The opera is brilliant, the genius of Verdi, in the hands of Fabio Luisi.
Dmitri Hvorostovsky is brilliant, gorgeous, intense, fascinating. His understanding of Renato is very deep, but many reviewers seem to not see his demeanor in the first act as good acting. If you do get it, though, you see that he is absolutely right. And then watch his world fall apart. He can rip your heart out.
Sondra Radvanovsky was a totally believable Amelia, very able to transmit her turmoil to her audience.
Marcelo Alvarez sang well and was charming as Gustavo.
Kathleen Kim is an adorable, if somewhat sinister (?) Oscar. Her singing was delightfully lilting and fun to hear, not at all annoying like some other Oscars I've heard.
Ulrica was played just right by Stephanie Blythe.
There are some visual distractions that would't have been missed had they been left out, but this Ballo is visually, musically, dramatically amazing, beautiful, entertaining, erotic, etc. I like it.
I saw it live. Now I can relive it whenever I like. That will be a lot.
GOOD NEWS! SUBTITLES ARE NOW AVAILABLE!
Thanks to everybody's effort, the Met was made aware of the omission of subtitles when they transferred production rights to RLJ Entertainment. They and RLJ worked quickly to correct the problem so that as of the date indicated above, we now have subtitles...glorious subtitles...so that we can finally make sense of all these wonderful operas with their convoluted stories; and we can finally submit reviews based on production quality rather than technical glitches.
