Plot Summary
In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara to create Cuba's National Art Schools on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Construction of their radical designs began immediately and the school's first classes soon followed. Dancers, musicians and artists from all over the country reveled in the beauty of the schools, but as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate. Forty years later the schools are in use, but remain unfinished and decaying. Castro has invited the exiled architects back to finish their unrealized dream. Unfinished Spaces features intimate footage of Fidel Castro, showing his devotion to creating a worldwide showcase for art, and it also documents the struggle and passion of three revolutionary artists.

Beautiful and Amazing
I've visited the National Art Schools but at the time did not know their complete history. While there I listened the historical perspective of our guide. When I returned home the documentary just happened to be in the screening process in NYC. Another perspective even better than the first! What's beautiful and amazing? How the documentary is organized, the music playing in the background and the story being told. Years spent making this documentary well spent in my opinion! Thank you for making it!
Unfinished Spaces
This is a beautiful film. The rare shots of Fidel were for me very enchanting. The over-arching theme of art and liberation as a movement that went south captured in the state of some incredible architecture was surprising and has stuck with me since seeing the film at its NYC premier.
See it and be moved.
Remarkable Story, Emotional & Fascinating
This film takes you on a journey through the ups and downs of the Cuban Revolution through the eyes of three incredibly interesting and lovable architects. Each character has such personality! The buildings are unique and breathtaking. The story is so well-told, visually and with first-hand narrative of people who lived through this stranger-than-fiction history. You won't regret watching this film, whether or not you love architecture or Cuba!
