Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: "Unforgivable" isn't one of Mr. Techine's greatest achievements, but it's engrossing even when its increasingly populated story falters, tripped up by unpersuasive actions, connections and details. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jun 28, 2012

Fresh: [An] elliptical and somewhat loopy drama about the slipperiness of love at any age... – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 27, 2012

Fresh: Literate, intelligent and a model of accomplished European filmmaking, "Unforgivable" showcases the kind of emotional complexity that is all but gone from the screen these days. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jun 28, 2012

Rotten: Without fully realized characters, the film's major moments - each cutting remark and humiliating act - feel hollow. – Joel Arnold, NPR, Jun 28, 2012

A Fascinating French Film about Ordinary People

This is a rather French film about an aging author and 2 years of his life that revolves around his newly acquired wife, their friends and their families, set in a beautifully filmed Venice. There is an element of suspense, but this is not a romantic suspense film as it seems to be promoted. Rather, it is an unpredictable therefore fun drama of ordinary people. The famous author, for instance, is not particularly rich, and his beautiful new wife, an ex-model, tells him when they first meet, "Why are these questions? I have a very dull life." But when a dull life revolves around André Dussollier and Carole Bouquet's characters in Venis, it becomes a fascinating film in which every moment is fun to watch.
