Plot Summary
In an alternate universe where twinned worlds have opposite gravities, a young man (Jim Sturgess) battles interplanetary prejudice and the laws of physics in his quest to reunite with the long-lost girl of his dreams (Kirsten Dunst). This visually stunning romantic adventure poses the question: what if love was stronger than gravity? Two worlds. One future.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The novelty of the idea, which suggests a less elegant offshoot of M. C. Escher drawings, quickly wears thin. The production design is too busy, and the film's desaturated palette is forbiddingly austere.
Rotten: Upside Down is a very fancy piece of junk.
Rotten: Absent any emotional grounding, the film is a gorgeous, sterile construction, like a dream city unoccupied by humans.
Rotten: Despite its undeniably clever conceit and visuals, this love story set in twin worlds remains earthbound.

Creative Romance, Visually Stunning.
Okay, so this is definitely style over substance, but most romance stories aren't that deep in the first place. A story akin to Romeo and Juliet, where young lovers are separated by social status, has a beautiful metaphor for upper and lower classes, by literally having the world above and a world below, somehow connected together (please ignore the laws of physics, it's called "suspension of belief"). The filmmaker crafted clear rules to his universe that help us spend more time asking how our hero will manage to meet his long-lost love, rather than questioning the plausibility or plot-holes. Fantastic acting, all around, but the romantic leads do stand out. Kirsten Dunst has never been a favourite actress of mine, but here she shines with both youthful innocence and a grown attitude of trying to accept what life has become. I highly recommend to anyone finding themselves not wanting to sit through a boring romance that tries to call itself Sci-Fi/Fantasy (such as Twilight, Beautiful Creatures, The Host, etc.) as a happy medium between those genres that actually appeases both (rather than the aforementioned films that really only apiese the romance bit, and not all that well…)
Under rated romance
Highly underrated and understated. It is fresh and different. Any hopeless romantic with an interest in fantasy/scifi, should love this movie. I was completely consumed into the film from start to finish.
Loved it!!!!
It reminded me of Stardust!!!
