Plot Summary

A suspenseful, classic thriller, in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock, starring Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale, that will keep you on the edge of your seat and your heart pounding! When David (Luke Wilson) and Amy Fox's (Kate Beckinsale) car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, they are forced to spend the night at the only motel around, with only the TV to entertain them... until they discover that the low-budget slasher videos they find in their room were all filmed in the very room they're sitting in. With hidden cameras now aimed at them... trapping them in rooms, crawlspaces, underground tunnels... and filming their every move, David and Amy must struggle to get out alive before whomever is watching them can finish their latest masterpiece.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's welcome to see another movie that relies more on apprehension and suspense than torture chambers. Vacancy might not get Mr. Hitchcock smiling from above. But he won't be spinning in his grave, either. – Scott Bowles, USA Today, Sep 1, 2007

Fresh: Short, sharp and to the point, Vacancy has a single goal, and that is to scare the hell out of you. It's not as gleefully sadistic as, say, Hostel, but it will give you one very rough night's sleep. Naturally, I mean that as a compliment. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Apr 21, 2007

Rotten: Vacancy, in the end, simply offers a particularly aggressive brand of couples counseling. – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Strictly by-the-numbers horror. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, May 13, 2009

Terrifying little thriller!

I would definitely recommend this film to anybody looking for a scary frightfest. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because of the ending, which most people will either like or hate. I wish iTunes would get more horror films like When a Stranger Calls, The Messengers, and other Screen Gems films.

A good gritty horror film

In this day and age with horror films it seems slasher is all that exists and that the movies only focus on the torturing and degrading of characters. In Vacancy though it goes back to an older style of horror movies where you root for the characters to outwit the pyscos The film is set very well in the first scene, when the couples check into a creepy motel in the middle of the night. Until the final scene the scariness doesn't let up. While this isn't a breakthrough film or the best horror movie in the world, it's gritty, original and a great scary movie

One of the better horror movies released last year

This is a pretty good movie, it's mildly scary and has a decent premise, and it is a million times better than some of the other movies, like Captivity, Hostel Part II, and I Know Who Killed Me.
