Plot Summary
Lured by their dreams of fame and fortune, three ambitious young women enter the world of show business and discover how easy it is to sink into a celebrity nightmare of ego, alcohol and 'pills' - the beloved "dolls." A prim New Englander (Barbara Parkins) unexpectedly skyrockets from her job as secretary in a talent agency to a glamorous TV model. A determined singer (Patty Duke) finds that Hollywood success can also spell self-destruction. And a beautiful sex symbol (Sharon Tate) is torn between the money commands and the shame of feeling exploited. Based on Jacqueline Susann's phenomenal best-seller about the underside of Hollywood, this fascinating melodrama was once seen as a shocking behind-the-scenes look at how show business creates instant stars, destroys romances and changes personalities forever.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: It's an unbelievably hackneyed and mawkish mish-mash of backstage plots and Peyton Place adumbrations.
Rotten: It tries to raise itself to the level of sophisticated pornography, but fails. And it is dirty, not because it has lots of sex in it, but because it firmly believes that sex is dirty.
Rotten: Too dull even to function as camp.
Fresh: The choice of Mark Robson, a talented Hollywood journeyman director, for this piece of nonsense was inspired.

Gotta get, gonna get, have to get this movie!
Gotta get, gonna get, have to get this movie! Although the critics “drummed <this film> right out of Hollywood,” this happens to be my favorite movie of all time. The fabulously sixties hairdos, glitzy costumes, laughably memorable soundtrack, and over-the-top histrionics make for a highly watchable camp-classic. Finish your bust exercises, put on your barely pink lipstick, spritz on a bottle of Gillian Hairspray, and prepare to get “hooked” on “Valley of the Dolls!”
One of the best movies ever
I truly loved this movie and have seen it many times. It is campy and fun and very intense. Jackie Susan left us a legacy that will live on forever with this one. I bought the special edition and watch it all the time. I am also reading the book now for the second time. Give this one a try.....you will not be disappointed.
1960s campy at its best and it features the beautiful Sharon Tate
Okay, so its campy and corney...but is jackie Susanne, and its 1960s hollywood dreams gone wrong! Fun!
Patty Duke plays Neely O'hara, a recent hollywood success who soon turns to pills and booze to overcome her poor sucessful self (hum I can think of a few recent cases of that)
Barbara Parkins is boring but pretty as Ann and right off the set of Peyton Place which was a huge sucess back in 67. That leaves Sharon Tate, who really steals the show here with beauty that truly is "breath taking" and so much potential as an actress you can see why the term "screen presence" was simply made for her.
I have seen this...well more than I care to mention but its a 60s classic. You will find yourself fast forwarding through it after a few views just to see Sharon Tate more.
Remember after all that this book was the naughty bedside reader of its time...so very tame by todays standards...So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show of music, hairstyles, and costumes, as well as drama thats almost funny at times. Sharon was nominated for a Golden Globe as best new actress/actor...she lost to Dustin Hoffman for the graduate..Enjoy!
