Fresh: Both newcomers to Mr. To and longtime admirers should be prepared for a master class in directing.
Fresh: Johnnie To and Johnny Hallyday have a bloody good time in "Vengeance," a smoothly executed revenge thriller that finds one of Hong Kong's genre masters in assured action-movie form.
Fresh: Rational behavior takes a backseat to genre requirements, though few if any will care when the killers stalk each other with such a tongue-in-cheek sense of destiny and deliver deadpan dialogue that makes fun of their own absurdity.
Fresh: More than once does To's grandiose imagism miraculously grant this rote thriller a gleam of the sublime.

Now how did I ever miss this movie?
Oh now I REMEMBER how I missed this GREAT movie...we saw something else at IFC. I really wanted to see this when I saw the trailer and here I finally find it on iTunes to see it.
At first, I thought that this would just be another revenge, shoot em up movie. But it's hard when there are other obstacles trying to take revenge. The plot and action very well done. The actors as well...I recognize two actors in this movie, also acted in "Ip Man." The main actor Johnny Hallyday...WOW what a close resemblance to the character Gaff, Edward James Olmos played in "Blade Runner". Good job on the acting!
I hope I didn't forget anything that I want to say, or I will need stickers to remind me, wink. Anyway, I want to keep it short and not bore you with my review...but the MOVIE won't! Heck, it got good praise from Roger Ebert...very hard critic to please.
REALLY! See this movie!
Totally misled by the high ratings
Having sat through what is decidedly a conventional genre film, just barely competent in terms of scripting, acting, etc, I am baffled as to all these high ratings from critics and viewers alike. These must be folks who have never seen a John Woo flick circa 1990.
It's all been done, decades ago, far more stylishly! Johnnie To is a Johnny come lately to this field. And Johnny Halliday is awful in this, pretty much sleepwalking through what is admittedly a moribund script. (See him instead in The Man on the Train, where he plays a character in a similar vein with far greater psychological persuasion.) The rest of the cast and the characters they play are forgettable cartoon, cardboard cutouts. You want tormented and brooding killer and hitmen, go back and see Woo's The Killer instead.
Horrible!
This movie was SO bad, I only watched the first 45 minutes before I gave up and deleted it.
