Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Unfocused and repetitive, this feature-length commercial by Jeremy Snead uses a muddled timeline and bargain basement graphics to produce a horn-tooting, "Aren't games awesome?" tone. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jul 17, 2014

Rotten: It's a lovefest in which critics' voices and debate are simply absent, and the only talking space is wonder, nostalgia and excitement for the future. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Jul 17, 2014

Rotten: Video Games: The Movie opens with a barrage of statistics before segueing into a sketchy history lesson-cum-industry promotion. – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Jul 15, 2014

Rotten: A by-the-books documentary that gives the history of video games bracketed with the voices of spirited members of the vast community of gamers, Video Games: The Movie is aimed squarely at its target audience. – Linda Barnard, Toronto Star, Jul 17, 2014

Disappointed

I was really looking forward to this documentary, but I was disappointed.

I was expecting to hear about some of the video games that changed the industry. However, only two were ever really mentioned in depth (ET and Mario). Most other games were just shown through their cutscenes in the background, but were never mentioned. It confused me because for a movie called "Video Games: The Movie" you would think they would at lease talk about games that were absolute fan favorites that made a huge impact.

I was also extremely disappointed with the lack of behind the scenes. I have been waiting so long to see the process of making a game through motion-capture technology. They mentioned it, but fail to go into depth with it.

Also, the voice acting process is something many of us fans would love to see. However, that was mentioned, but wasn't shown.

Finally, I felt like some of the people they were interviewing had no idea what they were talking about. Sometimes they would say something and I would go, "What?"

I could go on and on about why this movie left me disappointed. It had some redeeming qualities and the history was nice to learn, but I don't think I would watch this twice.

Hopefully other viewers will find it a lot more enjoyable than I did!

“Documentary"

Doesn’t appear that anything was researched when producing this. The historical viewpoint retelling the history of the industry is full of inaccuracies. Very little to be learned here unless you are completely new to the video gaming world.

Long and generic

I had high hopes for this doc. It was very generic and skipped a lot of important stuff. Very boring in parts.
