Plot Summary

A new breed of crime-fighter now stalks the urban landscape - the anti-graffiti vigilante. These dedicated blight warriors stop at nothing to rid their neighborhoods and cities of street art, stickers, tags, and posters. Yet several of these vigilantes have become the very menace they set out to eliminate. In their relentless attempt to stamp out graffiti, they've turned to illegally and destructively painting other people's property. VIGILANTE VIGILANTE is the story of two filmmakers who set out to expose these mysterious characters and discover a battle of expression that stretches from the streets to academia.

Thoughtful and engaging documentary

This documentary balances philosophical debate with character studies. By the end it takes on a curious yet humorous "buddy" film feel. At its core, Vigilante Vigilante asks questions about what constitutes public and private, expression, repression, democracy and participation, and community betterment. It doesn't try to provide easy answers; both the graffiti artists and the buffers ultimately appear to be different sides of the same coin. However, the film makers' biases when it comes to the core issues of the film are not hidden. This is a thought-provoking and engaging documentary, and I plan to show it to my secondary students. But I don't give this documentary five stars because it fails to explore some avenues that emerge during its course. One buffer claims that he is fighting against the privatization of public space by individuals and this should have been taken more seriously. The issue that only some people can read graffiti, thus making it an exclusionary practice, is another point raised that I wished was further discussed. But I think this makes it a film that will naturally extend itself into discussion, debate, and consideration after viewing.

Vigilante Vigilante

Awesome and unique doc!

A mocumentary about graffiti

Two dudes creepily stalking a guy who paints over graffiti and picks up trash around Berkely. It highlights the hypocrisy and childishness of those who deface publc and private property and call it "art". Don't waste your time or money.
