Plot Summary

Something unspeakably chilling is heating up The City of Angels. Beneath the famed La Brea Tar Pits, a raging volcano pushes to the surface, raining a storm of deadly fire bombs and an endless tide of white-hot lava upon the stunned city. Experience the pulse-pounding thrills as the dream capital of the world erupts into the stuff nightmares are made of.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Like the substantially better Twister, this film insists on a thunderous, exhausting pace that inevitably becomes deflating. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Dec 6, 2009

Rotten: Hundreds of screen technicians obviously slaved on the effects -- and for what? A dopey subplot about a bogus arrest. Soap opera involving Jones' injured daughter. – Mike Clark, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The coast may be toast, but it's the lava, covering everything like a malevolent tide of melted butter, that makes this a disaster picture that's tastier than usual. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Dec 6, 2009

Fresh: This is one of the best pure disaster movies ever made (not that it has much competition). Congratulations to director Mick Jackson for a job well done. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Dec 6, 2009

Customer Reviews

Let's take the volcano...and push it somewhere else!

this movie is more of a comedy than a thriller, the scene of the melting subway man and how Tommy tells his daughter to stay in the car even though lava is surrounding it makes me laugh

Another Great

I really like this movie, and if you have seen Dante's Peak, you will REALLY like this one.
