This is an amazing movie and almost impossible to find in any format. I had given up hope years ago of ever being able to see it again.
Having only seen this film a few times 10-15 years ago it has stuck in my memory in a way that few films ever have.
It is a beautifully crafted story that works it's way through a visually stunning journey from South America to Europe. Set in the late 50's, it has that sort of "Mad Men" period feel and the lost sense of glamour and adventure of the pre- Jet Age intercontinental travel.
Sam Shepard plays the main character in subtle, complex tones that wrap you up in his story and pull you into the emotional slipstream that he finds himself unable to escape. Julie Delpy is stunningly beautiful. As the story unfolds, you cannot help falling for her as Shepard's character does. The sense of innocence and immediacy that she conveys through her hypnotically prominent eyes, porcelin skin and inviting mouth are staggering.
Without giving too much away, it is a hauntingly beautiful tale of inescapable fate, irresistable love, the dominance of passion over reason and an exploration of the human heart. It carries you along in the same way that films like "The Unforgiven" or "American Beauty" have that sense of inevitable destination. With a visual style that mixes Kubrick's "Lolita" with "The Talented Mr. Ripley".
I am so glad that this film is available on iTunes. If this review has touched anything that you love about film, you will not be disappointed.
Fantastic movie!
I agree so much with the previous viewer: I had given up hope of ever seeing this movie again, which I actually *bought* on VHS many years ago, and loved. I was so thrilled to happen upon this movie! I actually met Sam Shepard a few years ago at a party, and had occasion to chat with him: although I studied his plays in grad school (love him!), and am a big fan of his movies, especially "The Right Stuff," he was delighted when I told him that I happened upon "a movie you made called 'Voyager,'" which I didn't recall being in theatres (it went directly to video). He himself said, "Wasn't that a GREAT movie?!" He clearly was proud of it.
This movie is so well-done, and if you think, based on the premise, that it's filled with cliches, you're sort of correct, except everything works and falls into place beautifully. Completely unpredictable, shocking, and beautifully tragic, it is visually stunning and a pure treat to watch. If you like Sam Shepherd, you will love him in this movie; if you already love his work, you're in for one of his best movies.
