Plot Summary

A village in the South of France, 1960. A band of country boys aged 7 to 14, led by fearless young Lebrac, wages an uncompromising battle against their sworn rivals, the kids from the neighboring village. A war of honor and allegiance that's been kept alive for generations, in which humiliation is the most fearsome defeat and no tactic is too extreme, including attacking the enemy stark naked! With their newest recruit, the brave and ingenious tomboy called Lanterne, victory is a skipping stone's throw away. But it's not easy to be an army of half-pints and not get into trouble with Mom and Dad after coming home from battle with torn clothes and missing buttons!

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The slick filmmaking - the movie has a glossy, Hollywood-ready feel that sometimes tips into the cutesy - works against its themes. – Rachel Saltz, New York Times, Oct 11, 2012

Rotten: Corny ... a revisionist fantasy of French heroism. – Jon Frosch, Village Voice, Oct 9, 2012

Rotten: At a time when most family movies come processed through extreme software and 3-D glasses, this film's gentle vision of the simple life has its old-fashioned charms - though they press too hard on the emo buttons for my taste. – Ella Taylor, NPR, Oct 11, 2012

Rotten: It does not attempt to provide a complete or even vaguely realistic depiction of the rural French resistance in the endgame to World War II. – Amy Biancolli, San Francisco Chronicle, Oct 11, 2012
