Fresh: Water for Elephants may not be the best show on earth, but it's still quite a show.
Rotten: Supporting characters are too hastily sketched in, serving only to further the unsmooth course of true love.
Fresh: There's no doubting the luscious detail and feel for the period, but the love triangle that inevitable kicks in is a little too rote, even for those in a forgiving mood.
Rotten: The movie may feel at times like a put-on, but it is in fact entirely sincere.

BETTER THAN EXPECTED!
When I first saw the trailer for "Water for Elephants", I was both intrigued and slightly concerned. While I was excited to see one of my favorite fictional novels come to life on the big screen, I was worried that Hollywood would ruin it by casting Robert Pattinson (of "Twilight" fame) as the main character and over-glossing the harsh, realistic theme of what life was like in 1930's-era traveling circuses. Nonetheless, I saw the movie on opening day, and to my surprise, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The scenery and backgrounds felt authentically nostalgic, the cinematography was beautiful, and the supporting cast of characters were peculiarly interesting in their own way. However, that's not to say the movie was without its flaws. Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon didn't seem to come across as a genuinely lovestruck couple. Their chemistry just fell a little flat. Plus, the screenplay wasn't as consistent with the book as I would've hoped, but I guess that's Hollywood for ya. They always manage to sneak in their own little changes here and there. But what I really commended this movie for was its villain, played by the multi-talented Christoph Waltz. His role as a dangerously maniacal ring leader and the husband of Witherspoon's character is so convincing and frightening, it'll make you completely forget about the film's minor flaws. Overall, "Water for Elephants" is a heartfelt, enthralling piece of art that hearkens back to the golden age of cinema. It may not win any Oscars anytime soon, but it's certainly still worth checking out.

Just Gorgeous
I loved the novel by Sara Gruen, and was nervous yet excited to see what the film would be like. It blew me away with the cinematography, the amazing soundtrack, and the wonderful cast. Such a beautiful movie unlike anything I have seen in years. I am definitely buying this movie to watch again and again.
