Plot Summary
In WE ARE WHAT WE ARE, a seemingly wholesome and benevolent family, the Parkers have always kept to themselves, and for good reason. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank (Bill Sage, “Boardwalk Empire”) rules his family with a rigorous fervor, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any cost. As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris (Ambyr Childers, THE MASTER) and Rose (Julia Garner, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR) are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family. As the unrelenting downpour continues to flood their small town, the local authorities begin to uncover clues that bring them closer to the secret that the Parkers have held closely for so many years.

Fresh: It's all a little silly, but Mr. Mickle's restrained gravity stifles the impulse to laugh.
Fresh: Mickle never seems in a hurry, so there is time to take note of the detail. "We Are" is rich in that regard.
Fresh: At 72, Parks turns in one of the most tender performances of his career - before reminding us, in the end, that he's still a guy who can sit across a table and make you tremble in fear with a stony gaze.
Rotten: There's some fun to be had, as long as your idea of fun includes being grossed out.

Tedious.
An hour and 45 minutes wasted. I don't even know how I made it to the end, and I'm usually a patient viewer. The plot moves along at a snail's pace and there's is virtually no mystery or tension. Boring and unremarkable.
A must-see
This is, by far, one of the darkest and disturbing movies I’ve ever watched. I didn’t really know what to expect going into this, since I didn’t watch the trailer or read a summary of it, and I’m glad I didn’t. My advice is to watch this movie without knowing what it’s mainly about because I was shocked when I found out what was going on. The only negative thing about this movie, in my opinion, is the ending; it’s not a bad ending, but I felt like it was a little rushed. But, We Are What We Are is an extremely disturbing and dark movie, and if you’re planning on watching it (which you should!), just know that it’s not a very happy movie; I’d say it’s about as depressing as the movie Melancholia, if not more depressing. Definitely check this one out.
Excellent!
So this film is not for everyone but rather some will love it and some will not I think. I found the acting to be absolutely fantastic and the story, although not entirely unique, rather unique in how it was approached. The look of the film was fantastic and i thought the main actors did an incredible job. In a sea of the same films over and over again this was definitely a pretty unique and fresh horror/thriller film. I would say this is definitely worth the rental price and maybe the purchase price as well. Rent before buying. Enjoy!
