Customer Reviews
Great if you understand E.M. Forster
This movie wasn't just made up - and people here think it was the director's fault. Clearly they never read the book by E.M. Forster. The movie was done beautifully and it followed the book to a 'T'. Not every story has a happy ending and this book clearly shows the misgivings of then english society and the class system where everything is centred on the 'good name' of the family. I loved this movie when it first came out , but it came out the same time as "Howard's End" - and the latter, also a story about the English class system, with its more famous actors, like Sir Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson did better in the box office. But still, I love this movie and have been looking for copies of it for ages. Glad I found it here on iTunes.
English people being horrid
A strangely uninvolving and slack little film, despite a great cast, Italian locations, and good source material. Rent "Room with a View" instead for your period costume and sunny locations fix. This one's a dud.
Anti-English Propaganda
This movie must have been made by someone who really hates the English. Let's see, our main characters are two thieving relatives, one upper class twit, and one morbid woman who wanders in and out like a ghost. Oh, and a bunch of Italian-speaking extras.
Plot? Sure - there's three or four plots, all competing for screen time. Mainly resolved by having someone die.
Spoiler Alert -- Don't worry, it all ends happily, other than the beloved baby who dies toward the end. Thankfully the baby is quickly forgotten so we can have an uplifting ending about two loveless souls supporting one another through the terrible adversity of being English.
