We should have read the reviews of the movie more carefully. The Disney movies can be fairly divided into pre-Eisner and post-Eisner era. This is a post-Eisner movie, and like most of that era, it is largely a vehicle for indoctrinating children into the joys of the left-wing agenda. The minister is predictably evil, while the "Indians" tribal religion is shown to be heroic and true. The movie's sets are bush-league (they look like plastic, theme park structures) and the Indians' costumes look equally contrived and too-perfect. The movie is also historically inaccurate: there were no indian tribes in that part of Alaska in the first place during that era. There were innuits. Also, it is a becoming a little boring that the "white man" is to be blamed for all the world's ills: let's not forget the "white man's" pennicylin and vaccines (usually distributed by "evil" missionaries) saved far more lives of indigenous peoples than were ever lost due to development and industrialisation. This movie lacks character. Don't watch it.
Just dumb
There was no book sequel therefore there should not be a movie sequel
A Coming-of-Age Surprise
I did not have the pleasure of seeing the first White Fang with Ethan Hawke playing Jack. My mother brought this home on video for me one summer as a kid. I had always felt a kindred spirit with the true-life story of Balto, a canine hero with many shared similarities to the hero of this film, therefore my childlike faith (plus my understandable ignorance regarding the original classic's existence) allowed me dive right into the movie. The breathtaking scenery of the rugged Alaskan wilderness was enough to warrant my approval right off the bat, but what really nails it home is the friendship between White Fang and Henry. We've seen so many of these scenarios played out on-screen: a human shares a special connection to a member of the animal kingdom and together the pair overcome adversities and strengthen their bond as a result. Some people prefer aliens, I personally like animals. If you're a fellow animal fan, then the bond between these two will come off as natural and unwavering without being overly cheesy or emotional. The Native American culture has always been fascinating to me so I had the added pleasure of seeing the hero and his master become the reluctant saviors of an oppressed Haita village in the wilderness. There is even a love story which develops with just the righ touch of humor, heart, and romance, AGAIN without being overly cheesy or contrived. Maybe the original classic is the better film, or maybe this was a surprising, albeit fictional, improvement. I find it to be simply a tale of courage and friendship against injustice and cruelty told without pretension or too much pomp-and-circumstance. The performances are believable, the scenery is incredible, the action is entertaining, and the heart is there.
