Plot Summary

White Wash, the documentary, is a film exploring the complexity of race in America through the eyes of the ocean. Examining the history of "black consciousness" as it triumphs and evolves into the minds of black surfers, we learn the power of transcending race as a constructive phenomenon. The story is narrated by the legendary, Grammy Award® winner Ben Harper (Fistful of Mercy, Relentless 7, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals) along with Tariq "Blackthought" Trotter of the Grammy Award® winning hip hop group, The Roots whom also originally scored the film.

White Wash Review

Wow! Not what I expected... Didn't understand all that went into being a black surfer. Really digs deep into the history of the black experience in this country and how that evolved into surfing. I was struck by some of the footage and moved by some of the stories. I think everyone should take a look at this film as it sheds light on how we see each other and how we see the surfing community. I loved it!

Yew!

White Wash is such a great film that travels through the history of surfing and civil rights, and ultimately details the often ignored evolution of the African-American surfer. I also appreciated how much history this movie offers about the stereotype that "black people can't swim." I highly recommend this film for the classrom and diversity studies, as well as the tv of any surf fan.

Topic (Racism) is not my issue with Documentary, if it were

"To simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality...
