Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Has a perfunctory, by-the-numbers approach to its story and its characters. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: While the setting can be mesmerizing, little else about this movie is captivating. It's a standard-issue thriller, with a twist you see coming a continent away. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: No event occurs without a character telling us what we're seeing. This unwelcome commentary is so overdone that it becomes, by the end, an invitation for audience participation. All together now: It's a body! Looks like it's been shot in the head! – Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: It's Kate Beckinsale on Ice. – Jake Coyle, Associated Press, Jun 24, 2010

no issues...

Not every movie is produced to be an Oscar winner/box office hit...but then again, I also have a life. I rented it despite all the negative reviews. I've seen a gazillion movies, and this does not rank anywhere near the bottom. I wanted a movie with some action, some intensity, and a few twists... predictable as they may have been, and got all of that. Therefore, I was kept entertained... which a) is what i figured would happen, and b) was the whole point in the first place. This is your typical 'movie for guys who like movies'... not for guys who whine online.

What were they thinking?

This has got to be the worst movie of this decade, yes even 'the happening' had a better story than this. It bills itself as a horror-thriller sorta movie, but its neither...its almost a comedy. The plot is full of holes and so predictable. Acting was horrible, dialogue was horrible, editing was atrocious, scoring was outrageously overbearing and character attachment - pfffft, there was none. This movie has a really stunning poster. And that is the best I can say for the movie. The first 10 minutes of the film, involving the Russian transport plane, is the most exciting part of the movie. You can leave after that part.Everything in this movie has been done before. The cop who has had a crisis on the job .. the flashbacks .. the reservation about your job .. etc.The most beautiful part of the movie was the scenery. However in most scenes, there were so much snow blowing around (Whiteout) you couldn't see all of the action. Reese Witherspoon was scheduled to play the lead. Not that Kate Beckinsale wasn't good in the movie, but the script catered on the gore instead of on the quality of the plot.

See for yourself

I read all the reviews saying how bad this movie was and although Im not a fan of action movies I thought I had to see for myself. This is not the worst movie ever. I have seen some pretty bad movies. This movie keeps you interested. It may be a bit predictable, but they do throw a twist in there to make you think you were wrong. I thought it was origional in its own that I dont see too many movies in Antartica. Some parts were a little corney, like when they find the plane, but if you get past the surface its actually ok. The part I didnt like was how you cant see whats going on out in the snow and there are some important scenes there, but they fill you in, and I know one point of the movie is the whiteout... that you cant see when out in the snow.
So overall this is one of those movies that are "to each his own", some people will like it and some wont. I dont think it will be a favorite to anyone. Kate is great as usual. She doesnt get enough credit in her career.
