Plot Summary

American legend Martin Scorsese ("GoodFellas," "Taxi Driver") made his feature directorial debut with this tender, touching love story about a couple unable to bridge the gap between their divergent worlds. This pre-"Mean Streets" autobiographical drama "surpasses similar efforts in 'The Graduate' and 'Easy Rider''' (Time Magazine). Starring Oscar-nominee Harvey Keitel ("Pulp Fiction," "The Piano") in his film debut, beginning the long and fruitful collaboration between Keitel and Scorsese.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The director, who also wrote the original story and screenplay, hasn't succeeded in making a drama that is really much more aware than the characters themselves. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: As a film, it has something to say to everyone. As a technical achievement, it brings together two opposing worlds of American cinema. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: In the aggressive self-confidence, the use of rock music, and the perceptive observation, Scorsese reveals an anthropological feel for street life and the attitudes of male adolescence. – Time Out, Mar 31, 2008

Fresh: A wonderfully inspiring low-budget feature, with more than just an inkling of the treats to come. – Film4, Jun 24, 2010
