This movie is really good and unique in its perspective
Not sure if one would characterize this movie as misogynistic, misanthropic or what, but it freaked me out as a guy. Very human characters, fairly plausible situations based on the development of the characters and plot. Reminds me of The Doom Generation for some reason, even though it is a completely different movie. Apologies in advance if this sounds pervy, but its progressively hotter until that progression crosses the line into creepy, and then scary. I wonder what a chick would think of this movie. Brrrr...
Indie Wanna-be.
This movie is obscenely terrible. I was intrigued initially and thought prior to watching it that it may posses some good character value but I was very wrong. It is a faux-pois wanna be Indie flick. The characters are lacking in any real depth and you can read through them faster than a Nicholas Sparks book. The plot is severely lacking and its tasteless sexual content belongs in a D-list horror movie. The stereotypes of each girl are laughable, especially the likeness between Deb and Thelma from Scooby-Doo. Honestly this director should not even have the privilege of being on ITunes.
Interesting and insightful
As much as I enjoyed this movie, it would not be something I'd suggest for the masses. The characters, though simple stereotypes, really were believable and represented the typical teenage girl much better than any Hollywood blockbuster. Between Kate's multi-colored hair in need of a touch-up and Ruthie, who would be so pretty if she just carried herself with more confidence, you can easily remember a time when this was your rag-tag group of friends.
As for the scare factor, the first bit of it is definitely creepy. The movie quickly evolves from campy horror, to more of an indie thriller. The best part of it was not knowing where the characters were going to end up, emotionally and physically, and seeing how they got there.
Best movie comparisons: "Freeway," "Hard Candy," "Mean Creek."
A strong running theme in this movie is what it's like to be a girl in a man's world. The light lesbian theme doesn't feel exploitative, and the characters themselves recognize how the world sees them. "We're just girls to them," Ruth says, unpathetically and entirely ironically.
