Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: In converting the stageplay Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? to his purposes, Frank Tashlin turns out a vastly amusing comedy. – Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Tashlin had a huge stylistic impact on the New Wave. Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, his greatest film, is the template for Godard's bold use of primary colors and 'Scope in the 60s. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: [Mansfield] constantly catches you off guard. She's this unabashedly crude movie's bleached-blond heart and soul. – Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York, Apr 9, 2013

Fresh: The picture sends up and encapsulates the complacency of the conformist Eisenhower years. – Philip French, Guardian, Jan 3, 2011

5-star satirical fun

This satire on the advertising world and Hollywood is a very funny movie. Maybe I'm being generous with the 5-star rating, but htis was better than I thought it would be. Jayne Mansfield plays a blonde bombshell who is not as ditzy as she pretends to be. Tony Randall is Rockwell Hunter alias Loverdoll, whom Jayne uses to make her last boyfriend Bobo jealous. One fun character is Rufus, played by Henry Jones. This man is a true character actor, from the cruel coroner in “Vertigo” to the lecherous idiot LeRoy in “The Bad Seed.” Joan Blondell plays Jayne’s companion and she is never short of caustic humorous wit. My only bone of contention was that we did not get to see much of Mickey Hargitay on screen. The price is right for this one. I wish “The Girl Can’t Help It” were also available.

The best satire on the mores of the 1950s

Very funny and rich in great set decoration.
Who wouldn’t want Jane’s 1957 Lincoln Premere convertible ?
Any way Frank Tashlim delivers in spades in every scene!
I have no doubt that this film version is way funnier than the popular broadway version with the same cast.
Rainbpw colored Poodles anyone?
