Plot Summary
Based on a popular series of video games, Wing Commander introduces us to an elite fighter squadron in the year 2654. The Earth confederation is at war with a vicious race called the Kilrathi. The Kilrathi have captured a navigational device which will allow them to jump through worm-holes in space to arrive behind enemy lines. Only this highly trained squadron, led by three young pilots, stand in their way. Christopher "Maverick" Blair (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is just out of the Academy, but his lack of experience is more than compensated by his exceptional navigational skills, though he is still haunted by the deaths of his parents in a previous galactic war. His friend, Todd "Maniac" Mashall (Matthew Lillard), is a brash, gung-ho fighter jock always rushing into danger. Their wing commander and leader is Jeanette "Angel" Deveraux (Saffron Burrows). Assigned these two new pilots by Admiral Geoffery Tolwyn (David Warner), the strong and beautiful Deveraux is at first resentful, but later develops feelings for Blair. Perhaps the two will find time for romance on their way to saving the solar system.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Wing Commander is based on a video game and has roughly the same degree of character development. That is all most moviegoers will need to know.
Rotten: Though the ingredients are potent, their blending here mostly comes off as formulaic, humdrum and sometimes unintentionally laughable.
Rotten: Things get truly dispiriting when the character dramas recede and the spark provided by Lillard and Holder goes out, leaving us only one incomprehensible battle after another.
Rotten: Though this could be the meat of a good space story, the combat scenes are weak variations of the game's.

Not even close...
This movie is absolutely awful. The acting is bad, and the special effects are pathetic. For anyone who was a fan of the games this movie was based off of, it is a complete disgrace. The characters have been drastically altered, the Kilrathi look laughably changed, and the spaceships, which looked quite advanced in the series, now look like World War II knock-offs. A waste of time for all, and an utter disappointment for the fans.
Attack of the Mean Kitties
Saw this at the theaters to see the Phantom Menace trailer. The movie's villains look very much like Chucky Cheese characters on the offensive, but with less dignity. I am very forgiving of many movies, but this is closer to forgiving the individuals responsible for biological weapons. I can usually find something to dig about almost any flick, but after the wretched script, not so special effects, huge lapses in logic and cheapo set design, all I can come up with is you will get a good hearty chuckle when the bad guys are first seen in all of their mean kitty cat creature design. I must hypothesize that there had to be at least one draft of the script where Freddie Prinze must defend himself by rubbing their ears and giving them nummies. You may want to skip this one.
Great!
Screw all of you who didnt vote this movie as having five stars.
