Plot Summary
Nazi-occupied Holland, 1945. In a snow-covered village, thirteen-year-old MICHIEL (Martijn Lakemeier) is drawn into the Resistance when he aids a wounded British paratrooper. Michiel's boyish sense of defiance and adventure soon turns to danger and desperation, as Michiel is forced to act without knowing whom to trust among the adults and townspeople around him. Wartime's harsh reality encroaches on childhood innocence as Michiel confronts good and evil, courage and duplicity, and his own burden of responsibility.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The movie immerses you in the consciousness of a restless boy desperate for initiation into the rest of his life.
Fresh: Dutch helmer Martin Koolhoven finds the perfect blend of classical cinema and arthouse sensitivities.
Rotten: Koolhoven elicits strong performances in the handsomely photographed feature but fails to sustain tension, creating a work that's smooth and reassuring, never truly gripping.
Fresh: Koolhoven's philosophical probing of human limitation among the good guys is all but overwhelmed by his commercial instincts and undeniable skill at juggling realism with genre.

Excellent
This is an excellent story that captures the essence of life during war. As an audience member, I was immersed in this movie right away, and instantly felt sympathy for the main character. If you like adventures and mysteries, and you appreciate the backdrop of WWII, then you will love this movie.
Didn't see "it" coming
This movie is really well done -- great visual feast that accurately conveys the times the movie portrays. Though the Director tries to create and maintain tension throughout, the movie did not have me on edge though it did have me looking forward -- curious to see how the story would unfold. In other words, it was neither a nail-bighter nor were there thunderbolts of startling discovery. There was for me, however, a constant tug in my gut brought on by the knowing that something grave was unfolding.
The ending was poignant.
don't expect much
slow. not very realistic. and the moody main character is in frame nearly the entire movie.
