Plot Summary

A Young widower, Wayland Jackson (Kurt Russell), moves with his only daughter into a North Carolina Appalachian town in the midst of the Great Depression. He soon falls hard for Collie Wright (Kelly McGillis) who has an illegitimate child. Jackson becomes involved with her family and soon proves his worth by joining them in their activities including a bear hunt and the building of a community clock tower. However, tensions run high when the family discovers that the baby’s father, who is a member of a mean clan across the river, means to take the child back.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: One of these days, maybe Kurt Russell and Kelly McGillis will look back at Winter People and laugh. – Caryn James, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: An overearnest story about feudin' mountain families that's good for little more than a few hoots at its own expense. – Hal Hinson, Washington Post, May 28, 2003

Rotten: Winter People is the kind of movie where you sit there asking yourself questions that apparently never occurred to the filmmakers. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: The film is shot in 'Scope, but the effort is essentially wasted by dull center framing that makes the format superfluous. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

One of my top 20 favorites

This movie is high on emotional intrigue and the relationships of the people. Gives you a real feel for history of the depression era and the life in the mountains of the south. Kind of like the Waltons on steroids. This movie is a hidden gem. Most people missed it when it played in the theaters.

The Winter People

A good story that was desecrated by poor acting and no doubt poor directing. Too bad too, I like the actors!
