Plot Summary
Winner of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, this tense, naturalistic thriller follows 17-year-old Ree Dolly as she confronts the local criminal underworld and the harsh Ozark wilderness in order to to track down her father, who has put up the family homestead for his bail. Independant Film At It
Debra Granik offers a brutally honest, and heartfelt drama that shines on every level. The acting was amazingly truthful; the characters believeable. Jennifer Lawrence delivers a commanding performance that demands your full attention from beginning to end. Her character, Rhee, has such strength of will as she stands squarely in the path, obstructing anything or anyone who would do her family harm. John Hawkes was also brilliant, playing the rough and dangerous uncle who, despite himself, is forced to choose a side. The subject matter is dark and gritty, bleak and often unpleasant, with a level of realism rarely seen in Hollywood. With every scene there is a sense of quiet foreboding, and a slow, uneasy crescendo reminiscient of the Coen Brothers. The washed out colors of the film serve as a constant reminder of the bleak circumstances that force this young girl to dig deeper than she should be expected at her age, in order to find a way to save all she has left in her world -- a burden she bears with striking defiance and courage. This film may not be for everyone. It's pacing is slow and the suspense percolates quietly just under the surface at all times. If you enjoy a great drama, however, do not miss this film. It will stay with you long after the final credits.
This movie is a MUST SEE!!!
Kentucky Girl,Jennifer Lawrence, shined as an actress in this film, but all of the actors made this story come to life!!! I loved this movie!!
I'd rather watch paint dry.
94% on the tomatometer is why I rented this movie but that just enforces my belief that movie critics all have their heads up their butts. This was as dull as they come folks, depressing and long scenes that are just plain boring...
