Plot Summary
An evil genie, the Djinn (Andrew Divoff), escapes from an ancient statue and wreaks havoc in this horror film from director Robert Kurtzman. The devious Djinn can regain human form permanently if he grants someone three wishes. The Djinn at first is trapped in a statue, which falls and cracks open when a drunken worker unloads it from a ship. The genie is inside a precious gem that a puzzled pawnbroker gives to university gemologist Josh (Tony Crane). The Djinn kills Josh, and Josh's friend and colleague Alexandra Amberson (Tammy Lauren), who had been resisting Josh's romantic advances, sets out to find the killer. She follows a trail of carnage, and she soon learns the truth about the genie from anthropologist Wendy Derleth (Jenny O'Hara). The Djinn presents itself to Alexandra, who resists his seductive offers to grant wishes, but then the fiend sets his sights on Shannon (Wendy Benson), Alexandra's younger sister. The genie makes his final stand to grant a third wish at a party where antiquities collector Anthony Beaumont (Robert Englund) is displaying the statue.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: An extravaganza of bad special effects and worse acting
Rotten: My best advice to anyone reading this review -- even someone who considers himself or herself a fan of horror movies -- is to stay away.
Rotten: It will be of interest to none but goreheads, who are likely to find the gore rather cheesy.
Rotten: watching with friends, especially the sort you open with a ring-pull, as it's more likely to raise shrieks of laughter than horror.

Better than I expected
Honestly, this is one of my favorite mid-budget horror films of all time. Wishmaster explores Djinn, (better know to our culture as genies) and gives them unspeakable power. The Djinni (Djinn is the plurral of Djinni, pronounced like our 'genie' played by Andrew Divoff) in this movie has unlimited powers, but is limited to use said powers when a human asks for a wish. The Djinni either uses the wishes to ironically kill the wisher, or to further his ploy to lower the barrier between our world and his to let other Djinn to come and reek havoc on our world. Add a dash of blood and gore, with a slightly known actress to play the protagonist, and you've got the general idea. I liked it, most people I show it to like it, it's a shame they flopped at the theaters.
C'mon People
People these days are too obsessed with millions of dollars in CGI, and over the top plots. This movie, while it isn't amazing, is pretty good. It may not have what were the best effects of its time, but its plot is good. It takes a simple old saying "Be careful what you wish for", and fleshes out the meaning. This movie is more of a midnight-terrorizer, or should be a part of a halloween marathon. As i said, its not an epic movie, its not The Godfather or Silence of the Lambs, but it has all the qualities of a good flick. I'd say its worth buying, but none of its sequals are (I think there are 5 in total). If you like horror movies, its a good buy, if you like Wes Craven, its a good buy, if you're on the fence i'd suggest renting it from your local movie store first and then deciding.

for you horror fans out there this is a real good movie, unlike other horror films that don't really have a good story behind it, this one does. And the acting was great, good halloween movie to have:)
