Okay for rental.

The wonderful Carla Gugino is always a pleasure to watch. Let's start off there. This film interweaves the lives of a group of women, who for some undisclosed reason, all seem to be oversexed yet undersatiated. It was a okay-fun movie to watch, and there is some good acting.

The negatives are that it seems like, at times, there is an attempt to not just shock (not too shocking to anyone with HBO), but really gross us out -- why a character cannot commit to her obvious lesbianism is linked to a really effed-up dog memory from her childhood. This same character was totally overwritten to make sure that we, as the audience, don't forget that she's a dimwit. Somehow, the actress still comes off endearing - which is totally hers to own, since the script is ready to throw her under a car -- literally.

Good concept. Good editing and art direction. You can see the inspiration of the amazing Almodovar masterpiece "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown." I guess my biggest complaint is that -- to me -- it seemed like a male perspective of how women feel in their relationships with other women and with themselves.

Then again...any movie that includes Xander Berkeley - even for 2 minutes - rates well enough to recommend. (Which, yes, includes Barb Wire.)

Finally, a watchable "chick flick!"

"Mix chick flick with soft core, and stir in some unexpectedly good dialogue..."
