Plot Summary
WORLDS APART is Denmark’s 2009 Oscar® submission; made by the director of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO. WORLDS APART tells the story of Sara and her family, who are proud members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. In the local community they go from door to door and preach about Judgment Day and eternal salvation for Jehovah’s chosen ones. But when Sara falls in love with Teis, she is confronted with her most difficult choice in life. Teis is not a Witness, yet their love grows through stolen, secret meetings. Sara is torn between her conscience, faith and passion and, facing ostracism from her faith and family, Sara must make the toughest choice of her young life. Sara’s journey through the film becomes a personification of how a person is influenced by religious fundamentalism and by the great personal costs and difficult choices it brings with it. A simple yet true story about the art of liberating yourself from a religion. From IFC Films.

A Bit Off In Accuracy, But Beautiful
Being a Jehovah's Witness, I realized that it might not be such a great idea to watch a movie such as this one. But I fell in love with the characters and it was extremely touching. Being a young witness in this day and age, I can sympathize with Sara and I think this movie is beautifully crafted. There arent many movies like this one out right now and I would definately suggest watching it. The setting was also gorgeous, and the music? Amazing. Two Thumbs up:)
Torn about the narrative but Niels is an excellent storyteller
First off I'm Christian. I am not a Jehovah Witness, but I do believe in God and Christ...which for me is about a relationship... with the trinity. I don't believe in disrespecting the spiritual practices and beliefs of others whether they be Buddhist, Hindu, Jehovah Witness, Druid or whatever...and I sort of don't support others doing so either. Mainly because when we judge another cultures, religions or practices we are doing so with a measuring stick created from our values. I understand filmmakers must choose a stance to represent, but demonizing a sect, community or movement is not my thing . Anyway, so this was an uncomfortable watch for me. I am hyper aware of the continual criticism Christians face (no matter what denomination) so I was expecting him to paint a picture of the big bad, disillusioned Christian crazy. Still, there was a strong story here and it was beautifully acted. This director has oddles of raw talent and I can appreciate that around my reservations and his own. Plus I know this is a true story so he most likely tried to remain loyal to the material. Still, he did choose the material. But beyond that, this director creates a landscape of real people who have complicated choices in front of them. I enjoyed the clash of values present in the characters and loved the pacing. I didn't feel like a 'movie,' was being cramped down my throat. I got to breathe in and breathe out with people who happen to be on screen, working out their dilemmas. This film will surprise you, it did me. So much so, I wish I had bought, not just rented. Watch it. It's worth it..and that's coming from someone who should have hated this!
Great Plot!
Wow this movie reminded me of all the manipulating people in the world and how they can really influence a life.. loved it.
