Plot Summary

Germany 1772 – the young and tumultuous Johann Goethe (Alexander Fehling) aspires to be a poet; but after failing his law exams, he is sent by his father (Henry Huebchen) to a sleepy provincial court to mend his ways. Unsure of his talent and eager to prove himself, Goethe soon wins the praise and friendship of his superior Kestner (Moritz Bleibtreu). But then Lotte (Miriam Stein) enters his life and nothing is the same as before. However, the young lovers are unaware that her father has already promised Lotte’s hand to another man.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Fehling, tumbling from puppy dog eagerness into weepy, inky self-pity, never quite rises to the requirements of the role, which may be hopelessly incoherent in any case. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Nov 3, 2011

Fresh: Highbrow pedigree is mostly window dressing for a commercial period romance about Germany's literary giant. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Nov 2, 2011

Fresh: Charming in a way that American romantic comedies have all but forgotten, Young Goethe in Love is by turns cute, campy and endearingly cliched. – Jeannette Catsoulis, NPR, Nov 4, 2011

Fresh: You needn't know a thing about Goethe or his works to enjoy the picture. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Dec 8, 2011

Wunderschöner Film!!

Beautiful and charming

This movie is definitely one of the most entertaining German movies made and well worth watching if you don't mind subtitles. It is a romantic comedy and it is certainly charming as well as heart warming. More importantly, it is the beginnings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who was a prolific writer and became one of Germany's literary greats with notable works such as Faust, The Sorrows of Young Werther, Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship and Elective Affinities, along with poems like The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Prometheus.
