Plot Summary
Hank Williams is making a buck pitching a snake-oil cure-all to the gullible, capping his spiel by picking up his guitar and singing. In the crowd is The Drifting Cowboys, a group of touring country-western musicians who happen to be passing through. Say, Hank, would you like to join our group? Memphis-born George Hamilton is winningly natural as Williams in the musical biopic of the short-lived but forever influential "Hillbilly Shakespeare." It's a deeply felt, lived-in story, made with the assistance of his widow Audrey and featuring timeless songs (Long Gone Lonesome Blues, I Can't Help It and Hey, Good Lookin' among them) lip-synched by Hamilton but sung by another C&W great: Hank Williams, Jr.

Your Cheatin' Heart
Although the movie is a hit with its depiction of Hank Williams it is sad to think that there has never been a more up to date version of his life. Regardless of Genre, Hank Wiliams is undoubtably one of the most influential artist ever. His ability to capture in song many of the common struggles of everyday life has never been matched. His chilling vocals of loss in love and life are uncanny and his unique tenderness and humor on human misfortunes lends one to wonder if he saw life with more wisdom and compassion than any of us could hope to imagine. I saw this movie as a child and immediately became fascinated with the life and music of the most talented musician of our time. I leave this post with a recommendation; if you are not convinced with the talent of Hank Williams after watching this movie than I challenge you to download "Beyond the Sunset" one of Hanks albums under the alias of "Luke the Drifter". Listen to the balads and the amazing way Hank tugs at your very soul with his wholesome melodies and artistic vocals. He simply is and was the greatest country music artist this world has ever had the luxury of knowing.
Pleasant cinema, timeless music
I was 11 years old when my mom took me to see this at a local drive-in in 1964. Looking at the clip, it now seems hokey and dated, but typical of the era. The five star rating overlooks the lack of gritty reality, and is primarily given for the fondness that I have for the movie for introducing me to Hank and his music. I have been a lifelong fan since. Hank Jr. was just a kid when he sang the sound track, and he does his father proud. As mentioned by another reviewer, a more realistic, updated biopic is long overdue.
