Plot Summary

Part fascinating fact, part dazzling fiction, Zoot Suit is the blistering film adaptation of playwright Luis Valdez' critically acclaimed stage drama based on the "zoot suit riots" that rocked 1940s Los Angeles. When barrio leader Henry Reyna (Daniel Valdez) and a group of his friends are unjustly convicted on circumstantial evidence and sent to San Quentin, activist lawyers Alice Bloomfield (Tyne Daly) and George Shearer (Charles Aidman) fight the blatant racially motivated miscarriage of justice to win Henry and his friends their freedom. Featuring Edward James Olmos (as the mythical "Pachuco") in the role that catapulted him to stardom, Zoot Suit is a scorchingly searing and seductively provocative work that skillfully blends action, drama, romance and music!

Viva La Chicanada!

I LOVE this film. Anyone who has a taste for good musicals and is interested in learning about the past of an important culture in American history will love it too.

This is a great movie indeed. I just recently met Luis Valdez when he visited our high school at Pajaro Valley High in Watsonville, California. Let me begin by saying Luis Valdez is an inspiration to Mexican Americans in discovering their true identity, because many new generations of teenagers take for granted the opportunities that are given them that they choose not to take.

ZOOT SUIT

I was lucky enough to meet Daniel Valdez at a store I used to work at in Gilroy. He was a nice guy and very gracious I knew who he was. Oh how I wish I had gotten his autograph but the store was busy that day. He played Henry Reyna in that movie so great especially opposite Edward James Olmos. The chemistry is so great. I wish I could see another movie with them together again.
