Plot Summary

As Shakespearean adaptations go, it's not quite as odd as moving The Tempest to another planet (as in Forbidden Planet) or Hamlet to a Canadian brewery (the secret subtext of Strange Brew), but it's still safe to say no one was expecting a version of The Taming of the Shrew set in an American high school. But unlike the previously mentioned films, 10 Things I Hate About You at least gives the Bard screen credit for his contribution to the story. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) is a tenth grader who has never gone on a date, as her parents have a little rule where Bianca isn't allowed to go out with boys until her older sister gets a boyfriend. The problem is, while her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) is attractive and intelligent, she's also a mean-spirited misanthrope who rubs nearly everyone the wrong way — especially boys. But Bianca and the guy she has her eye on, Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan), are eager to get their romance on the road, so Joey fixes Kat up with Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), a new kid in town who may be just bitter and mysterious enough to suit her. 10 Things I Hate About You is the first feature film for director Gil Junger, who previously worked extensively in television, including episodes of Dharma and Greg, Ellen, and Blossom.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Stiles, whose slightly rushed, impatient delivery sometimes recalls the young Jane Fonda, lets enough sweetness seep into her portrayal to lend even the nastiest retort a hint of forgiveness. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: At times the pic doesn't even seem certain which decade it's set in; the squeaky-clean high school environs often feel more '80s than '90s. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: As satirical as it is romantic, this is one teen film that is wise enough to span generations in its appeal. – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times, Sep 19, 2008

Fresh: Debut film director Gil Junger may be a TV veteran making a movie for the Clearasil crowd, but he doesn't sacrifice the story to gimmicky camerawork or overzealous pacing. – Mary Elizabeth Williams, Salon.com, Jul 6, 2008

THE Teen Movie of the 90s

Every generation of teenagers has a movie that defines their era, the 1970's had "Grease" the 1980's had "The Breakfast Club" and the 90's has "Ten Things I Hate About You" with an attractive and charasmatic cast including then-unknowns Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, this infectious comedy resonated with teens during this era

SERIOUSLY THE BEST MOVIE EVER.

I'm a pretty picky movie person. This movie is seriously the BEST movie that I have seen in my entire life. It makes me laugh soo hard but it also make's me cry in some part's like when HEATH LEDGER sing's to Julia Stiles. It's so sweet and perfect for anyone of any age. I have seen this movie so many time's and I absolutely NEVER get tired of it. And HEATH LEDGER IS THE MOST HOTTEST GUY IN THE ENTIRE PLANET. ENOUGH SAID. He's enough of a reason alone to get this movie. But the cast and the plot is so awesome-five stars. So GET IT ON YOUR IPOD!! IT'S COMPLETELY AND HONESTLY WORTH IT!! HEATH LEDGER IS SO FREAKIN HOT!!!!!!

RIP HEATH<3
