Plot Summary

Adapted from the terrifying short story by suspense master, Stephen King. Renowned horror novelist Mike Enslin (John Cusack) believes only in what he can see with his own two eyes. But after a string of bestsellers discrediting paranormal events in the most infamous haunted houses and graveyards around the world, he has no real proof of life...afterlife. But Enslin’s phantom-free run of long and lonely nights is about to change forever when he checks into suite 1408 of the notorious Dolphin Hotel for his latest project, “Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms.” Defying the warnings of the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson), the author is the first person in years to stay in the reputedly haunted room. Another bestseller may be imminent, but like many Stephen King heroes, first he must go from skeptic to true believer – and confront his demons to survive the night.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A faithful and creepy adaptation of [King's] 2002 short story. – Scott Bowles, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The movie attempts a false ending that doesn't quite work; the picture feels prolonged, dragged out, and its ennui lessens the impact of some of its more terrifying fillips. – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: 1408 is one of the good Stephen King adaptations, one that maintains its author's sly sense of humor and satiric view of human nature. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 23, 2007

Fresh: It reminds us what it's like to be scared in a theater rather than overwhelmed by buckets of blood and gore. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jun 10, 2008

Great Scary Movie

I saw this movie knowing only that it was based on a Stephen King novel and had Samuel L. Jackson in it. Nothing else. It grabbed me and didn't let me go. It's a great scary movie that doesn't need to rely on blood, gore, nudity, or excessive violence and torture to scare you. It's a lot more psychological and emotional than we've come to expect from horror movies. Great twists and scares. I recommend it to anyone looking for something to have a good time watching.
