Plot Summary
You'll be seeing stars and stripes as the most fascinating leaders in American history come to life in 1776, a musical about the birth of a nation! With the Boston Harbor still stained from over-taxed British tea, a revolution is brewing in the colonies! And now England has thousands of troops headed for America's shores to squelch her subjects' freedom-loving spirit! It's up to John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to convince a stubborn congress of British colonists to unite as American patriots and turn the inevitable war with England into a Declaration of Independence!

So relevant to today...
You've seen the John Adams miniseries -- now see him in a much different light. 1776 compresses a lot of history, but captures perfectly the trials and tribulations of Adams, Jefferson and Franklin as men of ideals fighting for a hopeless cause. The music is perfect. The song "Momma, Look Sharp" will bring tears to your eyes thinking of our men and women still fighting today on other battlefields for freedom, while "Molasses to Rum to Slaves" is a powerful reminder that the terrible institution of slavery was never just a Southern problem. Indeed, it is the awful compromise Adams, Jefferson and Franklin must make in the end to push through the Declaration that is the heart of the story. But bright numbers like "Richard Henry Lee" and "Sit Down, John" will bring lots of smiles, and remind you that our forefathers and mothers were human after all. A great musical with a great cast. Must-see!
Great Movie, but not the best version
When Jack Warner originally released this movie, he took out over 88 minutes of film, including the entire "Cool, cool considerate men" scene. This version restores almost all the removed scenes, but I have a laser disc copy of this movie that has all 88 minutes. This one only restores about 65 minutes. Buy it anyway. This is one of the greatest plays ever produced on Broadway.
One of my favourites!
I have a major problem with movies that totally disregard historical accuracy. "1776" is a mostly accurate, entertaining portrayal of the steps leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence....it makes one appreciate the challenging battles that were fought by Adams and the other patriots. Plus, Thomas Jefferson is a major hottie in this movie- that violin!
