Plot Summary
At the beginning of the 20th century, China is in a state of crisis. The country is split into warring factions and people are starving. With the citizens beginning to revolt, the Qings are creating a powerful, modern army to quash any rebellion. Huang Xing (Jackie Chan) has recently returned from Japan, where he has studied the art of modern warfare. When he finds his country falling apart, he feels he has no choice but to join the opposition, leading a series of violent rebellions against the powerful Qing Dynasty. As he launches the Wuchang Rebellion, the Qings turn the might of the New Army towards him and his fellow revolutionaries. Begun on October 10, 1911, the Wuchang Rebellion led to the Xinghai Rebellion, which brought down the powerful Qings. From the walls of the Forbidden City to the battlefields of China, 1911 tells the true story of the rebellion with startling historical accuracy and truly epic sweep.

Rotten: What should be rousing stuff - a republic is born! the chains of feudalism thrown off! - remains a kind of lavishly illustrated history lesson.
Rotten: The revolutionaries who fought to free China from nearly 3,000 years of dynastic oppression deserve a worthier cinematic monument than 1911.
Rotten: Chan has not injected any of his playful charm or physical virtuosity into Wang Xingdong's and Chen Baoguang's insipid, poorly structured screenplay.
Rotten: If the success of epic storytelling were determined by the sheer number of unnecessary on-screen name tags, 1911 would be a masterpiece. But the small matters of characterization, audience identification, and scene-making are entirely absent here.

Not my cup of tea
This is pretty much just a historical war movie so straight point and shoot battles and political talks fill it up. There is one scene with martial arts but its really short. In all honesty I found this film convoluted, rushed, and hard to follow. At times it focused more on a nameless childs antics than the characters at hand. Another poor decision they made was that the story places great significance on a few young men that it gave extremely small screen time to that died early on. Though it didnt even develop their characters, the most it did was sub their names and some of them it didnt even show die or I didnt notice. Yet it showed constant flashbacks of them with sad music throughout. Is that supposed to move me? That reminds me, a lot of the flashbacks I couldnt tell if they were things that happened or delusions. Other things that bothered me were that it kept showing words like on paper or cloth that the subs didnt translate that it kept on the screen for a long time while people in the film reacted to them. What did the words say? Speaking of subs, some of them are lightning fast and the small white text that appears should of been a different color cause a lot of the background makes it difficult to read.

The previous reviewer already summed up many of my own complaints.
My biggest complaint however is this: I hate dubs. They irk me with live action foreign films. But even though this Chinese movie isn't dubbed, the voices in my copy didn't always match the lips moving. It wasn't a timing issue, rather it was as if the voices had all been recorded later and on poor equipment. It's very odd to watch a movie in its original language and still feel as if it was dubbed. It's probably the fault of the Director and Producers, but either way, it was a further problem in an already problem filled movie.
