Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Despite the frenetic action scenes, the movie sags, done in by multiple story lines that undercut one another and by the heaviness of its conceit. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Cusack, with his one-of-the-guys face and his nice way with child actors, does creditable work as an Average American Dad trying to put things right. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 20, 2011

Rotten: [Nothing] will give you more respect for how difficult it is to be an actor than watching top talent like John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet and Oliver Platt struggling to treat the film's ungodly language and situations with perfect seriousness. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: 2012 is so long, and its special effects are at once so outrageous and so thunderously predictable, that by the time I lurched from the theatre I felt that three years had actually passed and that the apocalypse was due any second. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Jun 24, 2010

What a let down..

This was a movie that I had great anticipation for but what I recieved was a huge let down. If you enjoy watching 2 and 1/2 hours of fantastic CGI then this movie is for you. However if you enjoy a movie that has good acting with "reasonably possible" situations within a cataclysmic event then this movie is not one to see. The acting in this movie was very very sub par. The events that take place in the movie when the characters are fleeing these disasters were so far fetched that I was actually laughing during the movie in moments where others were clinching their seats. Maybe it is just me but watching a limousine drive down the street while dodging buildings, cars, etc.. oh and driving THROUGH a building or seeing a RV speeding down a mountain after a volcano has erupted with massive fireballs landing everywhere.. or maybe it was the small plane that was able to maneuver through tons of falling BUILDINGS and debris and metro trains flying through the air. All of these events, though visually they looked fantastic, were just so absurd I didnt know what to do with myself. I was hoping for a movie that was a little more realistic but I guess thats what happens when you create a movie that is about the end of the world. Evidentally they need to show you as many completely impossible situations as possible.

Incredible.

I saw this movie opening day in the IMAX theater, and, the one word that sums this movie up:
Wow.
Some people may not like this, or hate on this movbe just because of the storyline, but this movie does an excellent job on stating the old saying: "Life is short."
I would recommend this movie to ANYONE, even to those who try to prove this wrong. To me, 15 dollars is an absolute STEAL for this movie, and anyone who loves action must have this movie. 2012 is probably the best movie of all time, that I've ever saw. The special effects are amazing, and in the first maybe half an hour, you will be in kissing-space of the computer screen watching this.

OMG!!!!

I think this was, like, the AWESOME-EST movie in the entire universe. I thought it was scary, but also really good. I mean, some people say "oh, this movie is so predictable, or laughable. that would never happen!" Well, um, DUH! Of course it wouldn't! It's obvious, but that's what movies are for! It just annoys me when people say that. It's so stupid. Just that something wouldn't happen in real life makes it a bad movie? It's called FICTION people.
