Plot Summary
In Arizona in the late 1800's, infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his vicious gang of thieves and murderers have plagued the Southern Railroad. When Wade is captured, Civil War veteran Dan Evans (Christian Bale), struggling to survive on his drought-plagued ranch, volunteers to deliver him alive to the "3:10 to Yuma", a train that will take the killer to trial. On the trail, Evans and Wade, each from very different worlds, begin to earn each other’s respect. But with Wade’s outfit on their trail – and dangers at every turn – the mission soon becomes a violent, impossible journey toward each man's destiny.

Fresh: James Mangold's expert and entertaining 3:10 to Yuma demonstrates both the Western's age-old appeal, and the problems it presents to a contemporary filmmaker.
Fresh: Mangold's film is more than sufficiently subtexty and cynical for our modern sensibilities while simultaneously embracing Mangold's obvious pleasure in the Westerns' time-honored swinging saloon doors and stern masculine traditions.
Fresh: It is part of the richness of 3.10 to Yuma that this is a classical piece of storytelling with themes and characters that can be found in the very earliest Westerns.

Superb Modern Western
3:10 to Yuma is a masterpiece of modern filmmaking. The cinematography and acting are both superb, with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale delivering astonishing performances. This movie itself is a remake of an older film, which shows that the story is good if it was deemed worthy of being remade. The story line is both intriguing and exciting, exploring one man’s struggle to support his family and reclaim his honor. And since this movie is being offered on iTunes, I feel compelled to mention that the soundtrack to the movie is awesome – I bought the main theme because I liked it so much. Overall, great film and well worth the $3.99 for renting it; hopefully iTunes will soon offer it for purchase as well.
2007's Best Action Film, 21st Century Western Done Right
I'll admit, i didn't go to the theatre with high hopes when i went to see this flick. it seems to be a trend that 21st century westerns have been either over produced, or underrated. Cold Mountain, Jude Law's finest work, was a rare exception, but few "westerns" have caught the eye of the film-loving public. 2001's "American Outlaws" was no exception-- Collin Farrell's attempt to glorify the Jesse James and Younger gangs lacked substance. "Seraphim Falls," which i highly reccommend to anyone who'd like to see Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson in a western, flew damn near comepletely under the radar. the western seems to be a less-accessable genre of filmmaking these days. but luckily, "3:10 to Yuma" is here to save the West. this is a completely different take on the western genre, and justly so-- technology in the filmmaking world has improved, so why not make use of it? i'm not talking about CGI, i'm talking about real-honest-to-goodness cameraman work. you can see individual stubble hairs on Chrisitan Bale's face! the characters are far less archetypal than the westerns of old. Bale plays a farm hand with a wooden leg and battered pride, while Russell Crowe plays an outlaw who's not so hard of heart. and let's not forget Ben Foster, as long as we're talking about the acting-- this guy is something else. really, he is an evil you have to see to believe. in all, it's a great western, it pays homage to the old style of the genre while it painlessly brings in some new tweaks. it's a great film, and i'd reccommend it to anyone itchin' for a thrillride!
The Best Western I've Ever Seen...
Another remake that is great and not pointless (Hairspray). The acting in this is phenomenal -- Bale and Crowe are top-notch, with very convincing performances. The story is interesting. The action sequences outweigh any other film in 2007, and the special effects are few but good. Overall, some people are going to find this an overrated film, but if you're like me, it lives up to the hype and acclaim. This is one of the best films on iTunes so far. Buy/rent this film.
