Plot Summary

Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield - on the sea - as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. "300: Rise of an Empire" pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The naval collisions and melees play out in panel-like renderings that are bold and satisfying for the first half-hour but lack the momentum and bombastic je ne sais quoi of "300." – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, Mar 6, 2014

Rotten: For anyone looking for a sense of script (forget plausibility), Empire is a Trojan horse. – Scott Bowles, USA Today, Mar 6, 2014

Fresh: The spectacularly brutal fighting is the film's main calling card, and in that "Rise of an Empire" doesn't disappoint. – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times, Mar 6, 2014

Fresh: With its slo-mo ultraviolence, gushers of blood, impressive 3-D effects, homoerotic subtext, and self-important plot, this is a fan boy's fantasy, a four-star wonderment. – David Hiltbrand, Philadelphia Inquirer, Mar 7, 2014

AN EPIC DISAPPOINTMENT

I love the first 300 movie it's one of my all time favorites. Unfortunately I hated this movie. It's boring, filled with uninteresting characters and even visual it looks like crap. I mean did anyone else notice the constant debris/fire/lent constantly floating in the background? Seriously whyyy it looks so bad, but honestly the main problem with this movie is that nothing is ever fun or interesting. Even in the first movie behind all the stylish gore their was an interesting story and people. In this movie no one stands out except Eva Green and she's not enough to carry a whole film herself. Ugh just please don't go see this movie lets all try to forget it even exist.

Don't Waste The Popcorn

I could hardly stay awake. This movie is a waste of good popcorn.

Best action in years

As the first 300 was hyped up alil to much for the action it had I went into this new one, with the same kinds of expectations. I was WRONG, they beefed up the action and delivered it perfectly. Im not a story person i see movies for the visual shocks and aws and from start to finish this was amazing!
