Plot Summary

How far would you go to avenge betrayal? Colin Diamond (Ray Winstone, Sexy Beast) is about to find out in this gritty, provocative thriller. After he breaks down over the dissolution of his marriage, he kidnaps his wife's lover, and his rage pushes him to the brink of murder as his motley crew of buddies urges him to exact brutal revenge. Ian McShane (HBO's Deadwood), John Hurt (V for Vendetta), Tom Wilkinson (RocknRolla) and Stephen Dillane (Spy Game) unforgettably co-star in this compelling story that contemplates the nature of love and asks what it takes to be a man.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Think of 44 Inch Chest as a piece of chamber music and you can compensate for the thinness of its story and the lack of visual distinction. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: It's an interesting spectacle, but not enough to carry a movie. – Walter V. Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Is this a documentary about a porn professional? Or a gym rat? Neither. It's a stagy, half-entertaining, half-tedious acting competition between five excellent Englishmen. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It's sometimes difficult to discern whether the filmmakers are dissecting male bonding, ritualized aggression and sexual anxiety or celebrating it. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010

AVOID!

Horrible. Even with all the talented actors of the cast, the movie fails. The director's attempt to evince sympathy for the main character (after all, that is the whole point of the genre) fails. The movie ends and you are left with a feeling of, 'Where did the past 90 minutes go?'

AVOID.

Compelling

"44 Inch Chest" does lack action (and a good title), but it is nonetheless emotionally compelling and it does, as the summary claims, prompt questions about the nature of love, especially with respect to betrayal and revenge. The protagonist convincingly communicates a deep capacity to love--he nearly goes mad from hallucinations and the resulting emotional outbursts--and conveys how this capactiy makes him capable of both profound love and hate. The crux, in the end, is his choice between the two.

this sucked

boring, waste of good actors, i couldn't finish it, totally derivative, tedious stupid script
