Plot Summary

Víctor, a 17-year-old wheelbarrow leader, dreams of becoming famous and is often absorbed by the TV in the appliance store in the Municipal Market. He receives an unusual proposal, to carry 7 boxes of unknown content, in exchange for a torn half of a US $100 bill. He will get the other half when he finishes the job. Víctor, who has never seen this much money, has no idea how much it really is. But he also knows well that his need is greater than his curiosity. With a borrowed cell phone in which the contractor uses to tell him the way, Víctor embarks on the journey. Crossing the eight blocks of the market seemed easy but things get complicated along the way. There is something in those boxes that starts a high-speed wheelbarrow chase in the secret and gloomy corridors of the market. Without even realizing, Víctor and his pursuers will get involved in a crime of which they know nothing about.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: "7 Boxes," a low-budget Paraguayan crime caper goosed by low-rung dreams, crackles with the desperate energy of forced innovation. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Feb 6, 2014

Fresh: Certain to be one of the first titles from Paraguay to make a serious dent in the international marketplace, the pic makes a pleasurable surplus from minimal resources and plenty of ironic-comic-violent storytelling energy. – Robert Koehler, Variety, Feb 6, 2014

Fresh: What jumps out here is the pervasive desperation shared by just about every character. Within the film's universe, people from all walks of life go to great lengths for money. – Martin Tsai, Los Angeles Times, Feb 6, 2014

Fresh: High-energy chase pic makes the most of a novel setting. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Feb 28, 2014

7 Boxes (7 Cajas)

This movie, which I have seen two different times in Paraguay, is gripping, fast-paced, serious, touching, funny and profound. In a very compelling and entertaining way, the characters of the story (acted and directed superbly by Paraguayans) have so much to say about the real life challenges of people trying to care for their families, make a living, and define their selves. The movie I understand has been a big hit at international film festivals in the United States and around the world. A must see.

7 boxes

Hollywood needs to step up their game. With a limited production value, 7 boxes has so much more to offer than today's all form and no substance, empty movies. I was really impressed by how well the movie brought real life and suspense on to the screen. As you watch, you know that there are many layers of storytelling that keep you guessing while providing small clues to the mystery unfolding which can only lead you to a great ending. No big name, no talent actors overshadowing a great movie. Can't wait to see more like this. Come on Hollywood.
