Plot Summary

Hanna and Simon, a couple in their early forties, live together in Berlin. With their 20th anniversary looming, they both become restless despite being truly and deeply in love. Unbeknownst to one another, they become acquainted with Adam, a younger man, and fall in love with him. Clearly not your typical 1930’s romp, this reinvention of those classic films with Tykwer’s sleek direction is a playful update: an intellectual study of a modern couple looking for redefinition in a world of absolutes.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The lyrical conclusion, set to the surging, diaphanous music of Debussy, gives "3" a surprisingly sweet aftertaste. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Sep 15, 2011

Fresh: A playfully pieced-together, beautifully shot, and secretly ridiculous drama about a triangular relationship among blase Berliners. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 14, 2011

Rotten: Willing suspension of disbelief -- or suppression of giggles -- is required. – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice, Sep 13, 2011

Rotten: Despite its fascinating and humorous moments, one can't help but be frustrated when at times it switches away to spiritual pretentiousness. – Leba Hertz, San Francisco Chronicle, Sep 22, 2011

Tom Tykwer at his BEST!!

Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Cloud Atlas) is a true auteur! This movie is so well crafted and utilizes a great sense of style and humor. All movie buffs should check it out!

Ending

This movie is fantastic! I shows the by-play of each character and their lives, before and after each other. However, it has an ending that is begging for a sequel. Not a bad one, but one that asks, what happens next? I love this movie, but not the timing of the ending.
And this is a 100% German/European movie, nothing 'bad' is shown, but there is not any sense of modesty.

It was okay

An okay movie, but wouldn't want to watch it twice.
I find it odd that it's listed as a comedy. Not much funny here.
Didn't like the character of the wife in this movie.
I've watched quite a few foreign language films, so reading the speech in text isn't a big deal ... usually. I can follow many of the words spoken in Italian, French, or Spanish language films, so they are easier for me to get the full meaning of the dialog. German is quite a different situation though for me. Sometimes it was a little rough to watch the action and read the text at the same time, especially when they have multiple screen shots at the same time during parts of this movie.
If this movie is a comedy, then maybe it's because of the last ridiculous scene. Maybe it's a comedy after all.
