Plot Summary

“1” is an action documentary that showcases the glamour, speed, danger and excitement of Formula One Grand Prix racing. Narrated by Michael Fassbender, the film tells the story of the golden age of Formula 1®, when the sport became terrifyingly dangerous. In the late 1960s, Formula 1® cars doubled their engine size and sprouted wings, making them incredibly quick, but even more hazardous. With money pouring in from sponsorship and a new worldwide television audience, superstar drivers were born, thrown like gladiators into the ring. The drivers were legendary with charisma and raw talent, but many of them paid the ultimate price. “1” follows the story of the drivers who raced on the edge and those who stood up to change the sport forever. It is about the greatest show on earth–Formula 1®.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A fleet and frenzied sci-fi tale with more on its mind than alien gate-crashers. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Sep 19, 2013

Rotten: In trying to say everything, "Plus One" reveals it doesn't have much to say at all. – Inkoo Kang, Los Angeles Times, Sep 19, 2013

Fresh: Director Dennis Iliadis doesn't overdwell on the existentialism of the concept; he lets emotional beats strobe against the WTF experience of the temporal doubles, peppering the action with distinct images and events to make the repetition stand out. – Rob Staeger, Village Voice, Sep 18, 2013

Fresh: It ambitiously parodies and mourns the implications of the one coherent message that mass media manages to convey to all of its consumers in all its endlessly proliferating, ever-shifting permutations. – Chuck Bowen, Slant Magazine, Sep 11, 2013

ONE IS ASTONISHING……..TRULY ASTONISHING

I was drawn to Formula One watching Ayrton Senna and today thrilled to learn more about how the legacy of Formula One was born. Ty Woodhall

See this, not Rush

If you are any sort of a race fan then you really should see this terrific film. I lived through the golden years covered by the film and remember the days when we would be able to walk through the pits at Brands Hatch, and say hello to Graham Hill and the other drivers. But "1" showed so much more than I remember, and gave such depth to the characters with a wonderful mix of old footage and interviews superbly intercut. This film gives you more understanding of the Hunt / Lauda battle than "Rush" does, and brings across the thrill of the races much better as well. Looking forward to the chance to see it in the cinema. Great film.

One of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time

You don't have to be a die hard F1 fan like me to love this movie. By the same guys that brought you Dogtown. The way the producer and narrator tied in all the legends of F1's past and even some of it's later stars really tells you a fantastic story in this documentary biography about the important icons in F1 and racing's history. In my personal opinion watching Rush makes more sense if you understand the pioneers of F1 and the impact these people had on the sport as it is today. I was glued to my television. I wish I got to see this in the theaters instead of my tv, but hope to pick up on blue ray if it's ever released in that format.
