Takers (2010)

Critic Consensus: Takers boasts some gripping set pieces and keeps things moving quickly, but its two-dimensional characters, clichéd script, and brazenly derivative plot make it hard to recommend.

Laughable subplots about Elba's addicted sister (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) and Dillon's crooked partner (Jay Hernandez) only slow the action, which is all this movie has going for it.

Not terrible, but undemanding.

Takers is an above average heist film and while it could have benefited from an R rating, it is still one of the better movies of the summer.

A fun and engaging film with an exciting young cast making the most out of an uneven script.

It seems the writers thought the essentials of a heist film were a half-baked heist sequence and lots of gunfire. They seem to forget that if there's not a good story and characters in place to carry those extra elements, none of them will matter.

A mini-Michael Mann effort populated by one-dimensional clichés.

Audience Reviews for Takers
I've seen about a squillion movies (yes, that's because I'm old), and this was one of the better ones of this genre. As heist movies go this was better than Heat & the updated Italian Job. Probably not as good as The Sting or, even, Ocean's 11, but hey; few will be. I would place it on par with Ronin, I think. You just had to get used to seeing the African American actors in the leading roles opposite Matt Dillon. Since I'm of that demographic, it wasn't too hard for me. I didn't even mind the shaky camera work, Chris Brown, or T.I.'s acting that much. It was novel to see two fly brothers get such big roles. I thought they did rather well. Did you ever see Keanu Reeves in anything? T.I. & Brown were better that Keanu hands down. And who knew Chris Brown could run a parkour route? He carried that off rather well, I thought. Even young Vader did a good job. This flick is pretty much a pastiche of other heist movies, but lets face it; if you're going to rip off other people's work then at least do a decent job, right? Mission accomplished. I hope Idris Elba and Paul Walker do a sequel. Elba and Walker worked well together and Elba has true leading man charisma. Certainly more than Keanu, Tom Cruise, Michael Madsen, or Sylvester Stallone; all of whom still get leading roles for some reason. 4 Stars 3-22-14

My predicted rating: 3.5 stars
There is a fair bit of Action in this heist film and a pretty good line up of Actors, which sort of gives it an Oceans Eleven spin, however that's where the similarities end, Takers is much grittier than most Action films of this kind with a good plot, interesting heist, depth of characters and interesting back stories and had the ability to be a great film, unfortunately on a down side, everything was a little too busy in parts and dragged in others.

Takers is an unoriginal, chaotic, senseless mayhem of cops chasing robbers offering little new perspective to the crime-action genre. Laughable, embarrassing storyline conveying all sorts of wrong messages.
