The Marine subscribes to the notion that there's no such thing as a gratuitous explosion.

The Marine often feels like an oddball black comedy about a dysfunctional band of sociopaths, just masquerading as an action movie about one tough ex-Marine.

A delectably bad '80s-style actioner.

A happy surprise.

It's not a good film by any practical standard, but The Marine is bad in just the right way, a mindless throwaway that's at least smart enough not to take itself too seriously.

The Marine proves a poor showcase for the homeboy charisma Cena shows week in and out with the WWE.

Cena did a great job. i was impressed. It was a good movie for what it was. Patrick really did a good job.

WWE Films wanted to give someone other than The Rock or Stone Cold a shot at being in the movie, so they picked their poster boy John Cena, which is probably one of the better people they could have picked to headline a mediocre, yet very entertaining action movie.
Cena is a recently discharged Marine whose attempts to get back into a normal life are interrupted after he and his wife are in the wrong place at the wrong time when a group of thieves raise hell at a gas station, and take her hostage. From there it's basically a chase movie with Cena as a one man army against Robert Patrick's motley crew of psycho criminals.
The movie is formulaic, generic, and really ridiculous, but the filmmakers made the movie they wanted to, and weren't trying to make anything more than a purely breezy action spectacle that's here to entertain, and nothing more.
On that front, they are successful. The movie's not boring, it delivers what you'd expect it to, and Cena, despite being wooden as an actor, is of course pretty credible when it comes to the physicality of things. It's also fun seeing Robert Patrick ham it up like mad, even if he's really only here for a paycheck.
All in all, this movie's just okay, but it is fun in a goofy 'check your brain' sort of way. It of course could have been better, but it also could have been far, far worse.
