From the Back Cover

There is a reason you exist . . .

The day Lacey Sturm planned to kill herself was the day her old life ended. As an atheist who hated Christians, she thought church was a place for hypocrites, fakers, and simpletons. After a screaming match with her grandmother, she ended up in the back of a sanctuary, hating everyone in the room. But what happened in that room is The Reason she is alive today.

With raw vulnerability, this hard rock princess tells her story of physical abuse, depression, suicidal struggles, and more--and her ultimate salvation. She asks the hard questions--Why am I here? Why am I empty? Why should I go on living?--showing that beyond the temporary highs and the soul-crushing lows is a reason each of us exists and a purpose for our lives.

"A book with this much substance will, without a doubt, live on to change lives for generations. I truly believe Lacey's story has fallen into your hands at the perfect time. Dive right in and find out the reason."--from the foreword by Brian "Head" Welch, lead guitar for KoRn / Love & Death; author of Save Me from Myself

"Fresh. Passionate. Powerful. Just like her voice and presence, Lacey's writing compels and penetrates, and in the end she will change you."--Chap Clark, PhD, author of Hurt 2.0: Inside the World of Today's Teenagers

"In a time where the gulf between sacred and secular seems to grow incrementally, Lacey bridges the gap with her soul-bearing candor, raw passion, and prophetic insight."--John L. Cooper, lead singer of Skillet

"At its core, Lacey's story is one of hope. From desperation to redemption to victory, this is an amazing journey that apart from God would not be possible. Hers is a story that will encourage and challenge."--Michael W. Smith, singer and songwriter

Lacey Sturm is a mother, wife, writer, speaker, and musician. Originally the voice behind the platinum-selling international rock band Flyleaf, she is now a solo artist. But most of all, she is one of God's works of art, and she wants others to know and understand how special, how beautiful, how kaleidoscopically wonderful we are all made. Lacey speaks for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and its Rock the River events. She cofounded the Whosoever Movement and helped begin the RESET movement as one of their key speakers. She lives in Pennsylvania with her family. For more information, visit www.laceysturm.com.

I read the entirety of 'The Reason' in one sitting, and was left with this huge heart of joy and fulfillment. And more importantly, a greater understanding of what it means to be a human being who loves God. Lacey has a gift for explaining the intricacies of the feelings, questions and thoughts that come with being someone who follows Christ. She has touched so many lives with her story, and now that this book is out, I think it will inevitably bless more people.

This book isn’t just for Flyleaf fans. Although it does explain her departure, and it gives insight to things that Flyleaf fans might be curious about; this book is more than that. It tells a beautiful story of a girl who was in the same painful place that we’ve all been in, and how she discovered a life worth living.

Buy it — your life will be better because of it. I promise.

As part of my association as a Family Christian Store blogger, I was selected to read The Reason: How I Discovered a Life Worth Living by Lacey Sturm. This book is powerful! I couldn't put it down and read the whole book in one sitting. It's a great story written by Lacey Sturm, and in it she shares her very open and honest story and testimony of God's grace.

I could identify with the story to some extent. Back in a time when I was deep into the clutches of an addiction before I came to know Christ, I would sometimes entertain suicidal thoughts. At that time, I always felt like I wasn't "brave" enough to do it. In all honesty, now that I have been a sober child of God for over 21 years, I realize that being brave means finding ways to forgive and to choose to love those who hurt you even though they don't deserve it.

Lacey Sturm points out that "[I]t is brave to trust that the God who gave you life in the first place has a good plan in mind, even when everything around you looks like hell. It is brave to live." Like Lacey and many others who now walk with God, I believe that I have found a deep inner healing from everything I've been through in my life.

Through this book, Lacey shows us that we must see people through the eyes of Jesus and look beyond outward appearance, which often hides the desperation, anger, and hurt. Sometimes we can't relate to everything someone is going through, but we are called by God to show love and compassion toward those in pain. Lacey walks us through her life, from its early beginning as a newborn not expected to survive to growing up poor, often not knowing where her next meal would come from. She shares a story of physical abuse, drug use, suicide attempts, and her ultimate salvation.
